MUSIC INTERVIEW: PRINZHORN DANCE SCHOOL

Speed Date: From 'Clay Class' to Live Shows & Indestructible Phones

In a world that seems to spin faster by the day, where social networking allows us to make friends with one another at a click of the mouse, we may be able to see what people have tagged or who they’ve ‘poked,’ but it can sometimes be difficult to really get to know someone and what they’re about. Feeling friendly, cutting to the chase, and learning something about current musical artists who represent the best of what they do, Buzzine has set a table and would like to introduce you to your Speed (this week Double-) Date:

What is your name and where are you from?

Suzie Horn: Suzi Horn from Prinzhorn Dance School.

Tobin Prinz: Tobin Prinz, England.

Where are you right now?

SH: On my sofa, feet up.

TP: By the window, basking in the winter sunshine. I spend a lot of time in a pitch black, soundproofed box, so this is a treat.

Hey, do you have a cam on your phone? Can we have a pic to see what you’re up to?

Nokia 3310 on Buzzine.comSH: Sorry, no. I've got a phone which doesn't even have predictive text, due to downgrading for the joy of big buttons!

TP: No, sorry. I've got an old school Nokia 3310. Indestructible.

If our moms were setting us up on a blind date, what 3 things would your mom tell my mom about you?

SH: You'd have to track her down. She's pretty hard to get hold of. My sister always tells me I'm funny, my besters that I'm loyal, but goodness knows what my mum would say.

TP: He's clean. He's got all his own teeth and hair. He can drive a tractor.

Why are you answering these questions (what are you promoting)?

SH: Our album, Clay Class, is out at the end of January, then a new single, then a very special 7" soon after that

TP: As Sooz says...

What 3 words best describe your musical style?

TP: We always get asked this. And I always say, "Just have a listen." Whatever bull**** I come out with in an interview, listening is the only way.

What sentence best sums up your latest album?

TP: 261 days in a small room without daylight.

What are you most proud of in your professional life?

SH: Not settling for second-best.

TP: Collaboratively writing, recording, mixing, and producing an album, and understanding enough science/studio technology to capture performances without stunting the creative side.

What other music (apart from your own) are you listening to right now?

SH: The Brian James Gang.

TP: I'm not; I'm listening to a street cleaner outside my window talking to someone on his "walkie-talkie." I think they've found something on the seafront and he needs to go check it out. His voice is very excited. I like that the street cleaners tie all the little teddy bears and dolls they find onto their rubbish carts like trophies...

Who is your musical hero?

SH: Ava Jones.

TP: Anyone who has the balls to do their own thing, their own way, regardless.

Prinzhorn Dance School Clay Class on Buzzine.comWhen are you the happiest: recording in the studio or playing live on stage? Why?

SH: Live - love the giddy tummy before a performance and the tension of it all. Then seeing all the half-lit faces in the crowd, especially the dancing ones. Then there are times when you get something great going in the studio and get lost in it. So the escape of both, but live has the edge cuz there's a party after.

TP: I love and hate both the same.

What has been your greatest ‘rock star’ moment so far?

SH: Don't really do rock-star moments. Once we turned up to a hotel in Belgium and there was a balloon arch. That was pretty rock-and-roll.

TP: Been there, done that. Now I'm just trying to get my papers in order and everything ship-shape and bristol Fashion.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

SH: I'm in the present, so I have no idea.

TP: (Still) Looking for perfection. (Still) skint.

What is your motto?

SH: I got it from something Tobin said to me soon after we met: if you accept 99%, then you'll take 90%, then before you know it, 80% is the norm. So I always make sure I'm 100% happy with anything we put out and how we do it.

TP: Live and let live. Don't let the bastards grind you down.

Anything more to add?

SH: How come you don't change your questions for each artist?

TP: Even if it costs you ten times as much, even if you have to walk ten miles to a record shop, even if it takes ten weeks to arrive in the post, listen to our album on vinyl...

Where online can fans find out more about you?

SH: We have our own site: www.prinzhorn-dance-school.com. And Kris, this amazing dude at DFA, is representing us on other pages.

Prinzhorn Dance School's latest album, 'Clay Class,' is a solid, post-punk, hook-heavy treat of well-informed individualism, and it is available now on DFA Records.
