In a world that seems to spin faster by the day, where social networking allows us to make friends with one another at the click of the mouse, we may be able to see what people have tagged or who they’ve ‘poked,’ but it can sometimes be difficult to really get to know someone and what they’re about. Feeling friendly, cutting to the chase, and introducing a current artist who represents the best of what they do, Buzzine has set the table for today's musical Speed Date:
What is your name and where are you from?
Nathan Merl Eiesland; Northern Minnesota.
Where are you right now?
Ryne [Estwing]’s third-floor apartment, with no AC, on a 100-degree night.
Can we have a pic to see what you’re up to?.jpg)
Sure thing.
If our moms were setting us up on a blind date, what 3 things would your mom tell my mom about you?
He’s a good man. He’s persistent and empathetic.
Why are you answering these questions (what are you promoting)?
Scattered Trees is currently on tour and has a new record out.
What 3 words best describe your musical style?
Honest Indy Pop.
What sentence best sums up your latest album?
It’s a sincere look into what it was like for someone to grieve the sudden loss of his father.
What are you most proud of in your professional life?
Having a healthy idea of success and never giving up.
What other music (apart from your own) are you listening to right now?
Radiohead – Amnesiac and In Rainbows; Loudon Wainwright -- History.
Who is your musical hero?
Michael Jackson.
When are you the happiest: recording in the studio or playing live on stage? Why?
I’m energized by the limitless feeling of being in the studio and knowing that any idea can be realized. But I really love the exchange between the artist and the audience. It’s a unique human experience to stand in a room with other people engaging in the same moment together. Everyone is there because, in one way or another, they want to be, and when it’s right, I think everyone understands, on some gut level, what’s going on, even though no one can really explain it.
What has been your greatest ‘rock star’ moment so far?
Arriving at load-in before a show and each of us getting a $10 bill to buy our dinners with. I know it’s not huge, and it doesn’t happen a lot, but when you’ve done the weekend warrior thing for a fourth of your life and not gotten paid for it, you really appreciate when things like that happen.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
Hopefully alive and getting $10 bills every night to buy my dinner with.
What is your motto?
"People first."
Where online can fans find out more about you?
Scattered Trees are currently on tour, hitting dates all over the USA and Canada. Their show is honest, their tunes are sharp, and insights are shrewd. 'Sympathy' is out now on EMI. It's a substantial mix of depth and accessibility, and it needs to be heard. You should go and listen.
