MUSIC INTERVIEW: WASHINGTON

Speed Date: Drinking Coffee & Tap-Dancing to Tunes of Passive-Aggressive Pop

In a world that seems to spin faster by the day, where social networking allows us to make friends with one another at the click of the mouse, we may be able to see what people have tagged or who they’ve ‘poked,’ but it can sometimes be difficult to really get to know someone and what they’re about. Feeling friendly, cutting to the chase, and learning something about current musical artists who represent the best of what they do, Buzzine has set a table and would like to introduce you to your Speed Date:

What is your name and where are you from?

My name is Megan A. (for Armadillo) Washington, or just plain Washington if you like. I am from Papua, New Guinea via Australia and the Internet.

Where are you right now?

Right now I am on a couch in Brooklyn, New York City drinking a very strong coffee because it's 9:15 a.m.

Do you have a recent cellphone pic so we can see what you've been up to?Megan Washington Self-Portrait on Buzzine.com

This is me and my drummer/producer/non-sexual life partner John, backstage at a show in Perth. We practice circus tricks in our downtime.

If our moms were setting us up on a blind date, what 3 things would your mom tell my mom about you?

She'd tell you that I talk too much, that I like martinis but only when they're dirty, and that I might sneak morsels from your plate when you're not looking.

Why are you answering these questions (what are you promoting)?

My first and only album -- I Believe You, Liar -- into the non-antipodean known world.

What 3 words best describe your musical style?

Passive Agressive Pop.

What sentence best sums up your latest album?

The Zigfield Follies finished work, went to a karaoke bar, ordered a round of Old Fashioneds, then sung Motown songs and made up most of the words.

What are you most proud of in your professional life?

My surprising ability to tap-dance.

What other music (apart from your own) are you listening to right now?

Philip Glass's Monsters of Grace; the Judy Garland Legacy recordings.

Who is your musical hero?

Rufus Wainwright.

When are you the happiest: recording in the studio or playing live on stage? Why?

This is a difficult question, but I'd have to say recording in the studio. It's the first place a song gets bones, gets a heartbeat. It's Frankenstein's monster lying on the slab, and then its eyes open and it starts looking around and twitching its fingers. "It's ALIVE!!" That's a very exciting moment.

What has been your greatest 'rock star' moment so far?Washington I Believe You Liar on Buzzine.com

I got to perform at an awards ceremony in Australia last year, and we did a mashup of one of my songs called "Sunday Best" with "In the Mood." We had eight dancing boys in top hats and tails, and I got to shimmy around on a grand piano on live TV. I feel like somewhere far above, Ann Miller was looking down and tapping her foot in sequinned shoes.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

Doing much the same thing that I'm doing now: writing, recording, touring, drinking too much coffee.

What is your motto?

Trying too hard not to try too hard will kill you.

Where online can fans find out more about you?

They can head to www.facebook.com/washingtonmusic and look forward to prolific meaningless updates about cheese and LOLCATZ.

Washington's debut album -- 'I Believe You, Liar' -- is out October 11th on Universal Republic Records. You should take a listen to the Best Female Artist and Best  Breakthrough Artist from the Aria Awards, who also won nominations for album and single of the year, "How To Tame Lions.
