MUSIC INTERVIEW: MAT KEARNEY

Speed Date: Discussing Young Love, a Tender Heart & Reaching Number One on iTunes

In a world that seems to spin faster by the day, where social networking allows us to make friends with one another at the click of the mouse, we may be able to see what people have tagged or who they’ve ‘poked,’ but it can sometimes be difficult to really get to know someone and what they’re about. Feeling friendly, cutting to the chase, and introducing a current artist who represents the best of what they do, Buzzine has set the table for today's musical Speed Date:

What is your name and where are you from?

Mat Kearney. I'm from Eugene, Oregon, but live in Nashville.

Where are you right now?

Sitting on my bedroom toilet, but the lid's down and I'm clothed.

Can we have a pic to see what you’re up to?Mat Kearney on Buzzine.com

Yes, I have a camera but its too complicated to take a picture right now.

If our moms were setting us up on a blind date, what 3 things would your mom tell my mom about you?

That I have a tender heart because once, when I was five, I stopped in the middle of a soccer game to pick up someone I had knocked down. That I'm creative and that I'm extremely ADD.

Why are you answering these questions (what are you promoting)?

My new record, Young Love, just came out. Look for the neon yellow.

What 3 words best describe your musical style?

Storytelling, beats, and emotive.

What sentence best sums up your latest album?

It was the best of times and the worst of times.

What are you most proud of in your professional life?

Last week, my record surprised everyone, debuting at #1 on iTunes. I was shocked when I opened it up on my phone.

What other music (apart from your own) are you listening to right now?

Listening to a lot of Paul Simon and older hip hop records from high school. Like Tribe and De La.

Who is your musical hero?

Bruce Springsteen or Tom Waits. No one can write a story like those guys.

When are you the happiest: recording in the studio or playing live on stage? Why?

They are both so different. There is nothing more satisfying than creating a song in the studio, to finally put words to something you have always felt. But playing shows is spiritual; it's where certain songs become bigger than you meant them to.

What has been your greatest ‘rock star’ moment so far?Matt Kearney Young Love on Buzzine.com

Some guys in a band said Springsteen had recommended my record to them while they were working together. That or Playing Madison Square Garden.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

In five years, I'll be doing the same thing: Trying to write pop songs that rip your heart out. Maybe by then I'll have finally finished the screenplay I'm working on.

What is your motto?

"If your vibe outweighs your content, your destined to be a novelty." My uncle told me that.

Anything more to add?

Who is this date with again? I'm confused.

Where online can fans find out more about you?

'Young Love' is out now on Aware Records / Universal Republic. If you heard and loved the catchiest of catchy singles, "Hey Mama," then you're going to be more than singing and clapping along to the rest of the tunes. They're summery, they're sweet, and you should play them for new friends from your car window.
