MUSIC INTERVIEW: LIGHTYEAR

Speed Date: Watching Manners & Checking Out Killer Dimples with Sassy Indie Pop

In a world that seems to spin faster by the day, where social networking allows us to make friends with one another at a click of the mouse, we may be able to see what people have tagged or who they’ve ‘poked,’ but it can sometimes be difficult to really get to know someone and what they’re about. Feeling friendly, cutting to the chase, and learning something about current musical artists who represent the best of what they do, Buzzine has set a table and would like to introduce you to your Speed Date:

What is your name and where are you from?

Lauren Zettler (Lightyear). Brooklyn, New York via Indiana.

Where are you right now?

Williamsburg (Brooklyn).

Can we have a pic to see what you’re up to?

Lightyear on Buzzine.comI'm sitting here catching up on emails! And selectively deleting Viagra offers. I'm really bad at email. This is what I was doing two days ago, which is far more visually pleasing: (making a music video).

If our moms were setting us up on a blind date, what 3 things would your mom tell my mom about you?

Ha! 1. Killer dimples. 2. Will cry if there's no dessert. 3. But best manners in town (if you don't count the crying).

Why are you answering these questions (what are you promoting)?

I just released my debut EP, All Of The Miles, under my new moniker, Lightyear.

What 3 words best describe your musical style?

Electronic indie pop-noir. (I kind of cheated with that hyphen.)

What sentence best sums up your latest album?

I painted a landscape of time and travel, and it got a little messy; I really love how it looks framed on my wall. (I cheated again with the semi-colon).

What are you most proud of in your professional life?

I'm most proud of my ability to reinvent myself. Before Lightyear, I was doing something else under a different name, and I was bored. I made a bunch of changes. Now I'm here and I like it.

What other music (apart from your own) are you listening to right now?

I listened to a bunch of Biggie today. Also in heavy rotation are Robyn, St. Vincent, Phantogram, and M83.

Who is your musical hero?

Patty Griffin. Her ability to tell a story astounds me, as does her voice.

When are you the happiest: recording in the studio or playing live on stage? Why?

I'm happiest recording in the studio. You can take chances there in a really comfortable way; you can take something and turn it into anything. Whenever I'm in the studio, I feel like I could work forever...15 hour days every day. I like to get lost in there.

What has been your greatest ‘rock star’ moment so far?

Lightyear All of the Miles on Buzzine.comSeeing someone at a gig sing along to your song while you're playing is a pretty cool thing. And once KT Tunstall tweeted about the teaser video I made for my EP, and that was pretty neat.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

Touring touring touring touring. With more tattoos.

What is your motto?

Step your p*ssy up. (via Nicki Minaj).

Anything more to add?

Sorry, mom (for the comment above).

Where online can fans find out more about you?

Lightyear's self-released EP, 'All Of The Miles,' is available now. It's a sweet and twisted baby of electronica, alternative pop, dancey-hooks and sassy swagger.
