In a world that seems to spin faster by the day, where social networking allows us to make friends with one another at a click of the mouse, we may be able to see what people have tagged or who they’ve ‘poked,’ but it can sometimes be difficult to really get to know someone and what they’re about. Feeling friendly, cutting to the chase, and learning something about current musical artists who represent the best of what they do, Buzzine has set a table and would like to introduce you to your Speed Date:
What is your name and where are you from?
Thomas Bendel from Bergen County, New Jersey.
Where are you right now?
At my day job.
Can we have a pic to see what you’re up to?
Here:
If our moms were setting us up on a blind date, what 3 things would your mom tell my mom about you?
1. He's married.
2. He will make you laugh.
3. He loves animals.
Why are you answering these questions (what are you promoting)?
I am in a band called Buried Beds in Philly, PA. We play mystic-tinged progfolkrock. We are releasing an ep/film we made with Nate Johnson at Philly's Lemon Hill Mansion this past summer. Nate is an amazing presence to work with, and we are excited about the result of this collaboration. The ep/film drops on January 17th.
What 3 words best describe your musical style?
Order vs. chaos.
What sentence best sums up your latest project?
This is a snapshot of our music, loved ones, and surroundings; we hope this glimpse of our lives is as fun to watch/listen to as it was to make.
What are you most proud of in your professional life?
Maintaining a drive and focus toward music and drumming throughout all the stops and starts of life. Being able to navigate moments of doubt and feeling burned out, but pulling through more determined and inspired than before.
What other music (apart from your own) are you listening to right now?
Dr Dog's new one is fantastic, as is War on Drugs'. Hoots and Hellmouth just released an amazing album. Also, I've been just listening to whatever's on and try to find something in it, whatever it is.
Who is your musical hero?
There so many musicians I've been inspired by, I couldn't really choose one. But as far as instilling a love of music, that would have to be my dad. He was always playing records in the house when my sister and I were kids. He's a writer, so he would listen to records in his office at home when I was upstairs sleeping, and I would hear this sound emanating through the house; the beat was there, but muffled by two floors, kind of like sleeping in a big musical heart.
When are you the happiest: recording in the studio or playing live on stage? Why?
Each has its rewards, and I enjoy both immensely, but I think live on stage is the moment where you're making a sonic sculpture of sorts -- something that really only exists right then, you have (ideally) a receptive audience, and it's a one-of-a-kind experience. It's where the collective experience happens on all sides.
What has been your greatest ‘rock star’ moment so far?
Being asked by Mewithoutyou to tour would have been enough, but their fans are so rabid and into music that, at a few shows, people were singing back to us in cities we've never been. That's really cool and energizing.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
In the future.
What is your motto?
Be serious about having fun, making it good. Or have fun being serious, making it good.
Anything more to add?
Never tour in winter without thermal underwear. Call your wife/partner and family/friends often.
Where online can fans find out more about you?
Buried Beds' most recent project -- the release of the 'Small Stories' EP and accompanying film -- is a truly warm offering that sounds as much like a love letter to music as it sounds like a love letter from music. You would do well to spend some time in its company.
